A Message for the EC Community

Elmira, NY (06/02/2020) — Over this past weekend, our country witnessed a number of protests that resulted in violence in reaction to the tragic and disgraceful killing of George Floyd. This is a stark reminder that racial profiling continues to be a blemish on the house of our nation. We mourn with George Floyd's family and the Minneapolis community and stand in solidarity with those impacted by racial discrimination of any kind.

As many of you know, Elmira College was founded at a time when ideas about human rights and equal opportunity permeated much of the thinking in Upstate New York. Guided by its mission, the College has long-placed special emphasis on promoting global awareness and discussion amongst people from different backgrounds and cultures and takes pride in promoting respect and inclusiveness on campus. To that end, and in the spirit of our founders, we applaud those who participate in peaceful activism, for a student's years here are not just a time for preparing to make a living; it is a time for considering how to live; a time for redefining one's understanding of the world, for assessing one's place in that world, and for determining what responsibility one will have for improving that world.

While we cannot gather as a campus community right now, I encourage our EC community to reach out to each other and gather as a virtual community to share your thoughts, your fears, and, most importantly, your hope and belief that each of us has that power to make a difference.

Sincerely,
Charles W. Lindsay, PhD
President
