CMTS Summer Teacher Institute Registration Still Open
Elmira, NY (06/14/2019) — Registration for the 2019 Summer Teacher Institute, scheduled for July 17 & 18 at Elmira College and Quarry Farm, is still open for interested K-12 educators. The Institute is a two-day event that aims to apply concepts and ideologies from Twain himself to the modern day classroom.
This year's Institute will explore, discover, and reflect on how Mark Twain reads and speaks to this generation of students - Generation Z. In addition, participants will examine how they can leverage and realign what Mark Twain/ Samuel Clemens wrote that elucidates students' here and now from a "safe-literary distance" of both his nonfiction and fiction.
Sessions at the Institute will be led by Matthew Seybold, assistant professor of American literature and Mark Twain studies at Elmira College, and Jocelyn Chadwick, professor with the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Seybold and Chadwick will lead participants through interactive sessions focused on how teachers can use Mark Twain's time and his writings, as well as that of his contemporaries, to address Standards' targets and create an engaged and inquiry-driven classroom K-12. Participants will rely on both primary and secondary texts, and will hear from classroom teachers and students from around the country who rely on Mark Twain year on year.
The Summer Institute is hosted by the Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies, the Elmira College Office of Continuing Education & Graduate Studies, Elmira College Teacher Education Department, and the Greater Southern Tier Teacher Center.
