Dr. Sharma Conducts Workshop in India

Elmira, NY (01/15/2019) — Dr. Amarendra Sharma, associate professor of economics at Elmira College, recently conducted a workshop at the Oxfam India office in Patna, India, to train local researchers in survey methodology.

Sharma, in collaboration with Oxfam India, has initiated a research project on understanding the correlation between social norms, child marriage, and disaster in the state of Bihar. The research was conceptualized following a series of discussions which occurred when Ms. Ranjana Das, Hubert Humphrey Fellow with Cornell University (2017-18) and regional manager of Oxfam India (Bihar & Jharkhand) was pursuing her professional affiliation with Sharma at Elmira College. The context of the research is the eastern Indian state of Bihar which is known for migration, disasters like flood and drought, and rising incidences of child marriage.
