Mahoney Awarded First Barnhill Essay Prize

Elmira, NY (10/17/2019) — Associate Professor of English, Dr. Mary J. Mahoney, recently was awarded first place for the Barnhill Prize in Creative Nonfiction. The Prize, established in honor of Anne Clinard Barnhill, is awarded to individuals who fulfill the mission of The Longridge Review which is to " present the finest essays on the mysteries of childhood experience, the wonder of adult reflection, and how the two connect over a lifespan."

Mahoney's essay "Suburbs Plagued by Foraging Deer," had captured the editors' eyes early in the submission process, and was named the best of the best by contest judge Randal O'Wain.

"What initially drew me to 'Suburbs Plagued by Foraging Deer' was the confident narrative voice," said O'Wain. "In the end, however, what drew me to this essay out of all the very self-assured and talented writers, was the impressionistic style of 'Suburbs Plagued by Foraging Deer.'"
