Student Exhibits Work at Sweden National Gallery of Art
Elmira, NY (06/19/2019) — The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Huling Hummel, a continuing education student at Elmira College, was invited to display her artwork at the National Gallery of Art in Stockholm, Sweden. The gallery hosted her work for the International Dementia X Forum, which was held in May of 2019.
Hummel's collection, titled "UnMasking Alzheimer's," traveled to Stockholm at the invitation of Sarah Lock, executive director of the Global Council on Brain Health & sSenior vice president for policy at AARP.
Hummel's masks were first featured in a group exhibition, "Art Reflects," at the Pryzgoda Gallery, Community Arts of Elmira, which featured the artwork of those with the diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease or other dementias and their care partners.
Hummel a retired Presbyterian pastor, also wrote a book, titled "UnMasking Alzheimer's," which includes pictures of her art and descriptions of her experience living with Alzheimer's. She is currently serving on the National Council for Alzheimer's Research, Care and Services, representing the 5.8 million who are living with a diagnosis. Additionally, Hummel is the co-founder of the singing group, "Faithful Friends," for those in the Southern Tier who are living with a dementia diagnosis and care partners.
