Student Pays Homage to Heritage Through Artwork

Elmira, NY (01/24/2019) — Visual arts education major Tsiehente Herne '19 honors her Native American heritage with a display of Haudenosaunee pieces as part of the College's annual Arts Alive Celebration.

Herne, a native of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation, curated the exhibit of Haudenosaunee art that will be on display in the Gannett-Tripp Library from January 15 through February 28. Gathering artwork from noted artists in her community, Herne says the exhibit features a modern twist to older traditional arts. The pieces on display include selected drawings by Victoria Ransom and beadwork by Wahshontiio Jacobs.

The exhibit also includes Herne's rites of passage/coming of age ceremonial regalia with leather moccasins and an intricately beaded tobacco pouch.

Herne plans to create an online exhibit in conjunction with the pieces on display in order to provide more detailed information about the Akwesasne artists and their traditional arts. The public is invited to view the exhibit during regular library hours.
