10 Field Hockey Student-Athletes Receive NFHCA Awards for Academic Achievement

2018 May 23

Elmira College field hockey team placed 10 student-athletes on the 2017 Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Squad.

Elmira was one of 148 schools represented by over 1,700 student-athletes in the country to be honored by the NFHCA for achievement in the classroom. To qualify for the National Academic Team, players must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.

Of the 10 Soaring Eagles honored, three seniors earned the award for the fourth time: Julie Hockenberger '18, Atu Machika '18, and Sarah McCaffrey '18. In addition, Kelsie Aloi '21, Jodi Ceurter '20, Alyssa Hollow '18, Janie Kempf '21, Alison Mariano '18, Emily Selbert '20 and Liz Shephard '21 were each lauded for their scholarly successes.

For the second year in a row, McCaffrey was named an NFCHA Division III Scholar of Distinction, as released by the organization last week. The senior from Lambertville, New Jersey, was one of only 244 student-athletes nation-wide to receive the award, which recognizes those who possess a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.

"Once again, I am very proud of the team's dedication in the classroom," said Head Coach Lauren Silva. "The senior class has set a high standard of academic achievement, and I am encouraged by the performance of the underclassmen."
