Bawiec, Gervase Named EC Athletes of the Week

2018 May 23

Conor Bawiec '18 of the baseball team and Stephen Gervase '20 of men's tennis have been awarded Elmira College Athlete of the Week accolades for their performances during the week ending April 1.

Bawiec guided the Soaring Eagles to their first win of the 2018 campaign with a dominant pitching performance against the Pioneers of Utica College. The right-handed hurler went 8.0 innings in his lone start of the week and allowed two runs, zero earned, while striking out five batters along the way. In addition to his pitching, Bawiec had a strong performance at the plate over the five games last week. The Lebanon, Pennsylvania, native tallied four hits with a triple, four runs scored and two RBIs. He logged a hit in each of the three bouts against the Pioneers.

For the season, Bawiec owns a 1-2 record on the mound with team highs in strikeouts (26) and innings pitched (25.0). At the plate, he maintains a .259 batting average with one triple and two doubles. The 6-foot-4-inch utility man is second on Elmira with 10 runs scored and third with six RBIs.

Gervase went 3-1 in a pair of matches for the Purple and Gold in late March, playing a spot up at No. 2 singles. The product of Lebanon, Connecticut, began with a 1-1 showing against the Pennsylvania College of Technology. Gervase picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles against the Wildcats after falling at No. 1 doubles in a tightly-contested 8-6 contest. In the second match against the Pioneers, the second-year netter was fantastic, as he won twice without dropping a point. Alongside Patrick Tracey '18 at No. 1 doubles, Gervase cruised to an 8-0 triumph. He closed out Elmira's first win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Utica's Ben Gilroy at No. 2 singles.

Coming off of a freshman campaign where he won 14 times, Gervase's strong performance gave him a 4-4 overall record as a sophomore. Although he had not played above No. 4 singles before this season, Gervase welcomed his rise in the order with a 2-0 record at the No. 2 spot.
