Fitzgerald Voted Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team, Green Named to E8 Sportsmanship Team

2017 Nov 21

Megan Fitzgerald '18 and Emily Green '18 of the Elmira College women's tennis team were honored by the Empire 8 Conference this afternoon with year-end awards. Fitzgerald was named to the Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team for singles, while Green was tabbed as Elmira's representative on the conference's Sportsmanship Team.

Fitzgerald claimed the sixth E8 All-Conference accolade of her collegiate career dating back to her rookie debut in 2014-15, second-most by a single student-athlete in EC women's tennis history. The Thomaston, Connecticut, native posted an 8-4 overall record during the fall portion of the 2017-18 season, which included a solid 5-3 mark against Empire 8 competition. Three of her five conference victories were registered against teams that qualified for the year-end league tournament, including top-seeded Nazareth, third-seeded St. John Fisher and fourth-seeded Houghton.

She opened the fall season with four consecutive straight-set victories, including a win over the 2017 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year Kaili Saffran of St. John Fisher. Three of those triumphs took place on Elmira's home courts at the Murray Athletic Center, a venue where Fitzgerald posted an unblemished 5-0 singles record. Dating back to the 2016-17 campaign, Fitzgerald has won 10 consecutive singles matches at the MAC.

The 2017-18 season was particularly special for the senior, as she set etched her name in several major statistical categories in the EC record book. With 16 victories this season, eight in singles and eight in doubles, Fitzgerald set program records in total wins (79), singles wins (39) and doubles victories (40).

The Empire 8 also honored EC senior, Green, as Elmira's representative on the E8 Sportswoman of the Year Team. As a member of the Empire 8 Sportswoman of the Year Team, Green was recognized for "Competing with Honor and Integrity," which the conference emphasizes as an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission.

Green, a two-sport athlete that doubles as a member of the women's basketball team, produce a career-high five singles victories this past season, playing exclusively at the No. 3 spot. She also collected one doubles win, as she ended her three-year EC career with 15 total victories (10 singles, five doubles).
