Harkins and Porrett Named EC Athletes of the Week

2017 Dec 21

After a pair of record-setting performances by Hayden Harkins '18 and Justin Porrett '19, both members of the men's basketball team have been named Elmira College Athletes of the Week for the week ending December 17.

The sharp-shooting ability of Harkins was on full display this past Saturday, as the Tampa, Florida, native drained 11 3-pointers to help the Soaring Eagles earn a 111-100 victory over visiting St. Lawrence. Harkins' hot hand was evident by his 11-for-18 shooting (61.1%) from 3-point range, which included a bevy of deep makes from the senior forward. His 11 3-point buckets set an EC record for most makes in a single game, as Harkins surpassed former record holder Ryan Bennett '01, who previously held the record with 10 3-pointers against Keuka and Ithaca during the 1999-00 and 1998-99 seasons, respectively. The extraordinary effort also set a new Empire 8 Conference record.

Harkins ended the contest with a game- and career-high 33 points, all of which came on 3-point buckets. Eight of his 11 treys were registered in the first 20 minutes of regulation, which accounted for nearly half of Elmira's entire first-half scoring. He also pulled down a pair of boards and dished out four assists.

His record-setting performance was just the most recent in a string of hot shooting by 6-foot 5-inch marksman. Harkins has made at least four 3-pointers in six of Elmira's eight games and he has drained seven or more in three of those six contests. He leads the Empire 8 Conference in 3-point makes (41) and 3-point makes per game (5.1).

Porrett was equally as impressive in the double-digit win over St. Lawrence, as the third-year point guard put on a clinic with his passing. The Dumont, New Jersey, native produced his third double-digit assist performance of the season with 19 dimes, a mark the set new EC and Empire 8 single-game records. Porrett's 19 assists were five better than EC's previous record holder, Luke Vogel '01, who dished out 14 on February 20, 2001 against Cazenovia. Not only did Porrett set a new single-game record for assists, he also etched his name in the EC record book for career assists. In two-and-a-half seasons, Porrett has amassed 273 assists, good enough to move into ninth place in program history.

He finished Saturday's bout against the Saints just two points shy of a double-double with eight points, 19 assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals. After this outstanding performance, Porrett is averaging 13.6 points, 8.5 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Similar to Harkins, Porrett leads the Empire 8 Conference in a pair of crucial ball-handling statistical categories. His 8.5 assists per game leads the league and are a full 3.0 better than the next closest E8 player. Additionally, he paces the conference in assist/turnover ratio with a stellar 3.2 mark.
