Janice Teeter cast in 'God of Carnage'

2017 Nov 7

Janice Teeter of Corning is cast in the upcoming Elmira College Theatre Program production of Yasmina Reza's biting modern comedy, 'God of Carnage.'

In Yasmina Reza's award-winning God of Carnage, in a smart, saucy translation by Christopher Hampton, a playground clash between two eleven-year-old boys brings together their parents for a meeting to sort out the matter. A calm and rational debate between grown-ups about the need to teach children how to behave properly quickly deteriorates into a hysterical night of name-calling, tantrums, and tears - and not on the part of the children. Rum flows, tensions emerge and all gloves come off, leaving the couples' liberal principles and upscale home in ruin.

French dramatist, novelist, and actress Reza is best known for her brief satiric plays that speak to contemporary middle-class anxieties. Having studied at the University of Paris, Nanterre, and at the drama school of Jacques Lecoq , Reza's first two plays, Conversations After a Burial, involving death and sex, and Winter Crossing, about the unlikely friendship that develops between six people spending their vacation at a Swiss mountain resort, were both winners of the French Moliere Award. Her next creation, Art, about three friends who quarrel over a work of modern art, which is, in effect, a blank canvas, brought Reza international acclaim.

Featured in the Elmira College cast are Victoria Juliano '18 as Veronica, Nathan Edwards '18 as her husband Michael, Janice Teeter '21 as Annette, and Chris Lucchi '21 as Annette's husband Alan. The entire production is under the direction of senior theatre major Julie Salinero '18. Design is by Professor George de Falussy, with Technical Direction by Scott McGuire.

God of Carnage was called an "expert piece of stagecraft savagely funny" by the International Herald Tribune and is winner of both London's Olivier Award and New York's Tony Award for Best Play.
