Megan Fitzgerald Named ITA Scholar-Athlete

2017 Aug 15

The Elmira College men's and women's tennis teams were recognized for their outstanding performances in the classroom this past season, as both programs received a bevy of academic honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) this afternoon. Both squads were named to the ITA All-Academic Team, while several student-athletes on both sides garnered individual accolades by being named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is presented to teams that have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above, while individuals earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status by possessing a grade point average of at least 3.50.

A total of four Soaring Eagles were named ITA Scholar-Athletes, including former high school teammates Chris Konow '18 - who was also named Elmira College's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year this past May - and Stephen Gervase '20 of the men's team, as well as Megan Fitzgerald '18 and Cheyanne Holwell '19 of the women's program. Elmira's upperclassmen are no strangers to the prestigious national academic award, as this year's accolade was the third consecutive honor for Konow and Fitzgerald, while Holwell was recognized for a second straight year.

As a team, the Elmira women finished the 2016-17 academic year with an impressive 3.32 grade point average, while the EC men ended the year with a 3.29 GPA. This year's presentation of the ITA All-Academic Team award is the most recent in a five-year stretch of accolades for the Elmira women, who have claimed team honors each season since the summer of 2013. For the EC men, the 2017 award is their third straight.
