2018 Jan 18

For their efforts in Elmira College's upset 3-2 victory over No. 15/15-ranked Buffalo State on Saturday night (1/12/18), Connor Powell '20 and Jake Sabourin '21 both received weekly accolades from the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC). Powell was named the UCHC Player of the Week, while Sabourin was crowned the Goalie of the Week for the second time this season.

Powell, a native of Merrimack, New Hampshire, led the Purple and Gold with a pair of goals in the narrow victory against the Bengals. Powell then gave EC a brief 2-1 lead in the third period on a one-timer from the right faceoff circle.

Through 17 games in his sophomore campaign, Powell is tied for the team and conference lead in both points (26) and game-winning goals (3), and paces the UCHC in assists (17). He also ranks among league leaders in goals (9), power-play goals (4) and power-play points (10).

Sabourin earned his third win of the season and his second versus a nationally-ranked opponent in his debut season. The Cantonsville, Maryland, product limited one of the nation's top-10 scoring offenses to a pair of goals while making 18 saves. He made 10 saves in the third period alone, with seven of those stops coming as EC clung to the 3-2 advantage.

In the first eight appearances of his collegiate career, Sabourin sports a 3-4-0 record with a 3.29 goals-against average, a .898 save percentage and 221 saves. Among freshmen in the UCHC, he ranks second only behind teammate Gennaro Anzevino '21 (.500) with a .429 win percentage.

Powell, Sabourin and the Soaring Eagles will return to the ice on Friday, January 19, when EC heads to the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, New York, to take on Manhattanville College. The UCHC contest is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
