Amayia Giscombe '23 Awarded Iris Leadership Prize

Elmira, NY (04/13/2021) — Each year Elmira College awards upperclassmen students with the Iris Leadership Award. This year, two students received the award and today we feature Amayia Giscombe '23.

"To be awarded the Iris Leadership prize is not only an honor but also a blessing," said Giscombe. "I thank the College for recognizing my leadership capabilities and giving me the materials to further my education at Elmira College. With this acknowledgment, I will continue to help the community and students around me and continue to grow into the responsible adult I am working towards. Once again, thank you for this opportunity."

Giscombe is a resident assistant in Perry Hall and a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Student Alumni Council, and the Black Student Union. She also is the treasurer for an organization that helps marginalized students in her hometown.

Residence Life Coordinator Ashely Span gave these remarks about Giscombe, "Amayia has grown so much as a leader on campus! She ensures that the residents she encounters are felt included while helping to keep the community safe."

Named for the College flower, from which the College colors of purple and gold are derived, the Iris Leadership Prize is presented annually to students who have shown outstanding leadership activities beyond the classroom at Elmira College.
