Art Faculty to Host Gallery Talk

Elmira, NY (11/19/2019) — As a part of the annual Art Faculty Exhibit, the participating faculty will host a gallery talk, exploring how art world figures have informed their creations. Participating faculty include Assistant Professor of Art Chris Longwell, Media Artist Jan Kather, Associate Professor of Art Derek Chalfant and Instructor in Fine Arts Aaron Kather.

Longwell looks to the ancient world to experiment in creating hand built vessels, as well as classic forms thrown on the potter's wheel. Chalfant reflects on the enigmatic works of Jean-Michel Basquiat with his highly polished aluminum cross and menacing wax shirt suspended between tables.

Aaron Kather's study of André Derain's paintings can be seen in his choice of expressive color and form, while Albrecht Dürer inspires his drawings of objects from the natural world. Jan Kather draws on the works of international artists Utagawa Hiroshige and Anselm Kiefer with digital prints on paper and metal. Additionally, the show includes a Rashomon style collaborative video based on "The Ghost of Mark Twain."

Join the artists on Wednesday, November 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the George Waters Art Gallery in the Campus Center, to learn more about the artists and their process. The event is free and open to the public.

The Art Faculty Exhibit is on display in the Gallery through December 5, and can be viewed Monday through Friday, from noon until 4:00 p.m. ( the Gallery will be closed for the Thanksgiving break, 11/25-11/29).
