Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day 2018

Elmira, NY (10/09/2018) — Today, Monday October 8, is Indigenous Peoples Day and the public is invited to join the campus community in a panel discussion and poetry slam featuring , five-time "Women of the World Poetry Slam" representative, Roanna Shebala.

Shebala, a Native American spoken word artist, of the Dine' (Navajo) Tribe was born and raised on the Navajo Nation. Given the gift of storytelling from her father she combines story, poetry, and performance. Shebala constantly brings the voice of her heritage into her performance and written work, often treading into spaces where hearing native voices is unlikely.

Shebala has been on four National Poetry Slam Teams, a five-time "Women of the World Poetry Slam" representative, and A two-time "Individual of the World Poetry Slam" representative. She has been featured on Button Poetry, Indian Country News Today and published in various zines and magazines such as Annick Press, Red Ink Magazine, out of Tucson, AZ, Wicked Banshee Press, an online women's publication, and Suspect Press out of Denver Colorado. Shebala has performed at the Lincoln Center Out of Door, with La Casita in New York City, NY.

Other guest speakers include Dr. Hayley Marama Cavino, Ph.D., Michelle Shenandoah JD, LL.M, and Janet Berenice Flores, A.S., A.A. The events will start with a panel discussion from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. in the Gannett-Tripp Lecture Hall, and conclude with the poetry slam at 8:00 p.m. on the Campus Center Portico.
