Celebrating National Library Week
Elmira, NY (04/21/2020) — This week marks National Library Week, and more importantly, today is National Library Workers Day. While most libraries, including the Gannett-Tripp Library, are currently closed to patrons due to coronavirus restrictions, we want to take a moment to recognize our library staff including Marge Kappanadze, Jan Kather, Laura Kane, Pam Wheeler, Martha Smith, Nathaniel Ball, Kathleen Galvin '83, and Margaret Soper '07. Thank you for the continuous work and support of our students.
We caught up with Director of the Library, Marge Kappanadze, to learn more."I've been reading a lot of news about how libraries of all types are creatively offering online resources, services, and programming to their communities, not to mention putting their 3-D printers to work to produce face shields for medical professionals, first responders, and others," said Kappanadze. "It's commendable that library work continues during this crisis. With the explosive advances in technology in the recent past, college and university libraries have been providing access to electronic resources and virtual reference help for decades. When Elmira College was required to go online with teaching and learning during the COVID-19 crisis, we were in good shape to continue our support to the EC community. Our electronic collections are available, and virtual research help is ongoing."
"During this National Library Week, we are excited to celebrate libraries' continued commitment to serving their communities' information, educational, and entertainment needs," added Kappanadze. "Of course, the human-to-human aspect of library work is extremely important, and our library staff members miss working with students and faculty in person. We look forward to brighter times when we'll be able to see everyone on campus again."
