Day of Caring and Remembrance

Elmira, NY (09/11/2020) — On Friday, September 11, the Elmira College community gathered throughout the day to honor those who lost their lives on the morning of September 11, 2001.

The annual Day of Caring and Remembrance started at 8:46 a.m., the time of the first attack, as students, faculty and staff placed 2,996 American flags along Park Place to honor the initial lives lost in the multiple attacks between New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC. The flags remained along Park Place throughout the day and provided a visual reminder, for not only the campus community, but also those passing by, of the tragic day 19 years ago.

At 12:30 p.m., EC community members gathered at the flagpole in the center of campus for a memorial service to honor and remember.

Throughout the afternoon, EC students performed various random acts of kindness such as distributing flowers and compliments as a way to spread positivity and caring.

The day concludes with a candlelight vigil around The Puddle and the retrieval of the American flags along Park Place.
