Elmira College Launches Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program

Elmira, NY (07/13/2021) — Beginning Fall 2021, Elmira College will launch a preparatory program for post-baccalaureate students interested in medical school, pharmacy school, or a master's program in medical sciences.

Open to any individual who has completed a bachelor's degree and who meets the necessary entry requirements, the tailor-made preparatory program is for those interested in medical school, pharmacy school, or a master's program in medical sciences. The program features the core sciences required of medical programs with an opportunity to address a student's specific needs.

"The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program is a great option for recent graduates who may need to brush up on courses for entry into medical school," said Dr. Corey Stilts, associate professor of biology at Elmira College. "It also provides an opportunity for someone who has their undergraduate degree in another discipline, but who now wants to pursue a career in medicine."

Students will take courses in chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, biochemistry, physics plus two electives and an MCAT prep course.

"Many of the courses offer organized problem-solving sessions outside of class," said Stilts. "This, combined with a dedicated pre-med advisor, our small class sizes, and faculty support outside the classroom, make this program ideal for those looking to apply to medical school."

"A post-baccalaureate program can be very helpful for students looking to enter medical school," added Dr. Richard Terry, associate dean of academic affairs for Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at Elmira. "The program strengthens a student's core competencies in the courses offered and can add a great deal to their medical school application package."

Students in the Elmira College post-baccalaureate pre-med program, who meet the minimum standards for admission to LECOM, are eligible for an interview with LECOM at the conclusion of the program.

Application requirements for the program include a completed bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.7; a letter of recommendation from a faculty member at the bachelor's granting institution (or professional references for those who have been out of school for two or more years); and transcripts from each institution attended. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and admission is competitive.
