Elmira College Nursing Faculty Delighted By Generous Gift

Elmira, NY (08/20/2021) — The Nursing faculty members are excited for a new addition to their simulation lab that will enhance their program and help nursing students gain practical skills. The only one of its kind in the region, Pediatric HAL is an advanced patient simulator that was recently gifted to Elmira College by a generous alumna.

The alumna wishes to remain anonymous, but she stopped by for a visit recently to see her gift in action. Now retired, she was a school nurse and is eager to help the next generation of students who are learning techniques in the classroom that she had to learn on the job. The Elmira College nursing faculty dubbed the simulator "Andy," after the alumna's late husband.

"All of our simulators provide opportunities for nurses to practice and grow confidence in their skills before performing those skills on live patients in the clinical settings," said Colleen Parsons, who runs the Elmira College simulation lab. "Our high-fidelity simulators like Andy allow the students to experience multiple true-to-life situations. It's especially important for our students to practice using lifelike simulators because so much is demanded of RNs in hospitals and emergency care, especially with pediatric patients. Andy will help our nursing students get better healthcare outcomes for their real-life patients, and potentially save some precious lives."

Andy's distinct attributes include the ability to mimic emotions, to respond to light and track movement with his eyes, provide real-time feedback during emergency procedures like CPR, and more.
