Elmira College President's Council Presents Annual Awards
Elmira, NY (05/20/2019) — The Elmira College President's Council awarded its highest honors, The President's Council Award and the Stand Energy Prize, during a ceremony held May 16 in Peterson Chapel.
The Stand Energy Prize was presented to Robert Fenton '19, a biology major with an environmental science concentration, from Norwood, New York. The Prize, established by Stand Energy Corporation, recognizes an Elmira College student who, in the course of performing an internship with regional businesses or community organizations, has demonstrated outstanding leadership, initiative, creativity, and responsibility. Robert was nominated by his supervisor for his internship with Fagan Engineers & Land Surveyors, P.C.
Fenton completed multiple community service events, both through Elmira College and with Fagan Engineers, including the Lackawanna Trail Cleanup with Boy Scout Troop 2 and STEM night at Horseheads Intermediate School. He also served as an Elmira College Orientation Leader. Fenton was offered, and has accepted, a full-time position with Fagan Engineers and is looking forward to joining the Fagan team, and the many opportunities for advancement, following Commencement
The President's Council Award was presented to alumna Martha Pfeifer Pierce '63. The Award recognizes outstanding Elmira College graduates who have distinguished themselves and the College by exemplary service in the College's greater community, and who, by giving generously of their time and talent, has improved the quality of the community.
After graduating from Elmira College, Pierce worked in the EC Office of Admissions before teaching in the Elmira City Schools. She served as an Elmira College Trustee from 1993-1999, during which time she also served on the Elmira College Alumni Association Board of Directors. In 1998, Pierce was presented with the Elmira College Distinguished Service award for her work in improving the quality of life for her local, national, and global communities and for demonstrating success as a leader in her professional and community work.
In addition to her service as an EC Trustee and Alumni Board member, Pierce has served on the boards of many other organizations, including the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes and Choral Society, the Chemung County Historical Society, Bethany Village, and the Elmira College President's Council. She also has volunteered with organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Booth School Reading is Fundamental program, and PAL (Pupil Assistance in Learning). Pierce was a vestry member of Grace Episcopal Church and a member of the Genesee Valley Hunt and the Junior League of Greater Elmira/Corning.
