Elmira College Theatre Opens Season October 25

Elmira, NY (09/27/2019) — The Elmira College Theatre Program begins its 2019-2020 season on October 25 and includes comedy, drama, and musical theatre.

The season begins in October with performances of Darcy Parker Bruce's, Poet Soldier, October 25-27. In Aleppo, two American Army Rangers rescue an injured Syrian woman about to give birth. At a nearby hospital, a neonatal nurse with an unwavering sense of duty struggles to save the lives of infants as her hospital is bombed. In 2018 Soldier Poet received the Judith Royer Award For Excellence in Theater from The Association for Theatre in Higher Education and was the Connecticut State Recipient of Portland Stage's Clauder Prize.

OPPROBRIUM: An Evening of Hungarian Short Plays, translated by George and Rita de Falussy, will fill the Watson Arena November 14-17. These plays reflect the changes, social and political, that occurred prior to the collapse of the "Iron Curtain" separating Eastern Europe from the West. Hungarian playwrights comment on a changing world, guised as comic and dramatic pieces, in order to avoid the censor which would prevent production of their work. The performance is directed by George de Falussy, associate professor of theatre at Elmira College.

The Wolves, by Sarah DeLappe and directed by Hannah Hammond, Elmira College assistant professor of theatre, is up next in March. "The scary, exhilarating brightness of raw adolescence emanates from every scene of this uncannily assured first play by Sarah DeLappe," according to The New York Times. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, a girls soccer team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals. Performances are March 6-8, 2020, in Gibson Theatre.

The ever-popular Evening of One Act Plays, featuring short plays showcasing the College's advanced directing students and actors hit the Watson Arena stage April 2-4, 2020.

The 2019-2020 season concludes May 22-24, 2020, with A COMPANY OF WAYWARD SAINTS - The Musical by George Herman. A commedia dell' arte group wanders by mistake into the eye of an allegory. They are humanity, wayward saints all, who are far from home and without means. A nobleman may be their salvation if they can put on a good show for him. Surprisingly, the Company chooses to present the history of man, from the Garden of Eden through Everyman in birth, adolescence, marriage and death. Along the way they enact other wayward adventures such as the assassination of Julius Caesar and the homecoming of Odysseus. It is a fine mosaic of life redeemed by humor and human understanding.

All Elmira College Theatre productions are free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances begin at 8:00 p.m., with matinees at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
