Hometown History Influences Student Artist
Elmira, NY (03/11/2020) — As the annual Arts Alive celebration continues, work by art major, Lucy Shemo '21, will be featured in Gibson Theatre Lobby March 10-24. Her work includes painting, drawing, and printmaking.
"I'm not exactly sure where my investment in art began," said Shemo. "I drew on walls as a kid. I don't know . . . it's a response and a way of understanding the world around me. I never thought when I was little that I wanted to be an artist. I don't think that now either. It's really simple--I just make stuff and it means a lot to me."
"I was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania, where 25 years prior, caskets were washed from their graves. Homes were destroyed," recalls Shemo. "I found this photo in a flood journal and wanted to keep it forever. For me, it's like peering into a dream, or a nightmare, except it was real. I wasn't there for the Agnes flood of 1972 but I still feel it."
