Join Elmira College on March 30 As We Talk Climate And Justice Solutions

Elmira, NY (03/22/2022) — Elmira College will join hundreds of colleges, universities, K-12 schools, and faith organizations from around the world in a conversation about climate solutions and climate justice during the Worldwide Climate Justice Teach-In on March 30.

The EC event, which is open to the public, includes panel discussions, a low-carbon meal, an Environmental Fair, and an Environmental Upcycle Flea Market. The panel discussions will include topics about climate justice and solutions, climate science, climate and health, climate and religion, and more.

"This is hopefully the start of a new tradition at EC, discussing practical and equitable solutions to one of the largest environmental issues on Earth," said Dr. Trevor Browning, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science. "So many of the world's challenges are linked to or heightened by climate change. This is a topic that affects everyone and we wanted to give our students and the community a chance to learn and engage in a rich dialog that will leave them feeling motivated and inspired to make changes and help find solutions."

Attendees can either join the panel discussions in person or virtually. The hour-long sessions will be at 10:20 a.m., 1:15 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. EST. The evening session will include members of Elmira College's senior leadership and they will talk about the ways Elmira College is incorporating climate and sustainability into the College's long-range plans.

"The panels are made up of Elmira College faculty, staff, alumni, and members of our larger community," said Dr. Doc Billingsley, Assistant Professor of Anthropology. "While the event is part of a world-wide movement, it is designed in such a way that we can focus on what we can do at the local level to address this global challenge. We are excited for the opportunity to meet and learn from each other."

The community is invited to participate in the Environmental Fair and Environmental Upcycle Market. The Environmental Fair will be from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the Campus Center and includes several booths, including tables featuring Crosswinds Farm & Creamery and Muddy Fingers Farm. Parkhurst Dining Services has arranged a low-carbon meal in the dining hall that will source local foods that require less energy to produce. All are welcome, standard dining fees apply.

The Environmental Upcycle Flea Market will be from 11:00 a.m. - 2 p.m. and is a chance to browse items left over the years by previous students. Items such as clothes and small furniture will be placed in the parking lot behind the Gannett-Tripp Library (GTL). Attendees will be asked for a donation to browse the items and proceeds will go to the EC Environmental Club. By pairing the items with new homes, it extends their life and reduces the amount headed for the landfill.

Details about the Climate Teach-In at Elmira College will be posted to this event page. Check back frequently as more details will be added over time, including panel locations and virtual sign-in information.
