New "Dodge and Burn" Issue Highlights Sentimental Camera Equipment
Elmira, NY (07/26/2019) — Dodge and Burn, an annual print-on-demand journal, features selected photos and statements by Elmira College students enrolled in Photography I courses during the 2018-19 academic year.
For Calinda Ceterski '22 and Marisa Deal '21, the course and photographs went well beyond a normal photography portfolio. .
"The photos I took during this class are important to me because of the camera they were taken with. My grandfather allowed me to use his camera that he bought in Germany while he was in the military," explained Ceterski.
Deal had a similar experience.
"Although I have always had an appreciation for photography, I had never thought about taking photos myself," said Deal. "It wasn't until I signed up for Photography I in college that I understood why my grandpa was obsessed with it. By using his film camera, I have felt more connected to him than I ever imagined."
Other students in the course borrowed cameras from family and friends or used one of the digital cameras provided for the Photo I course. Students also experimented with "cameraless" images called photograms. The cover image for the 2019 Dodge and Burn comes from a candid photograph that Kaylene Sauschuck '22 captured of her roommate Alexis Dinga '22.
