New Year Brings New Programs, New Excitement

Elmira, NY (09/12/2019) — Students are back on campus and the 2019-2020 academic year is in full swing. With the new academic year come new accolades, programs, and faces at Elmira College.

In its just-released 2020 BEST COLLEGES rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked Elmira College sixth among the Best Regional Colleges in the Northeast and second among Best Value Colleges in the Northeast.

"There is a national concern about the rising cost of a college education - and we agree," said Dr. Charles Lindsay, president of Elmira College. "To that end, and effective with the 2019-2020 academic year, Elmira College's tuition and fees were reset to $35,400 ($33,900 tuition plus $1,500 fees) - a decrease of 15%. This moves Elmira's tuition rate to one of the lowest undergraduate tuition prices of any four-year private college or university in the region."

The College has also been listed by the Princeton Review as a Best National College, by Forbes on its America's Top Colleges list, by the Washington Monthly as a Best Bachelor College, and named a College of Distinction for innovative learning opportunities and expert blending of the liberal arts with professional programming in business, education, and nursing.

The Fall Term at EC also welcomes a new environmental science major, four new concentrations - medicinal plant chemistry, professional chemistry, chemistry for health sciences, and general chemistry - within the chemistry major, a new master's degree in adolescence education 7-12, and an accelerated, online business program for adult learners.

The new EC eSports program kicks off its inaugural season this fall with recruiting and scrimmages to prepare for a full launch of competitions in the Eastern College Athletic Conference in Term II.

On Wednesday, September 11, Director of Athletics Renee Carlineo announced the addition of men's and women's wrestling as intercollegiate programs that will begin competition during the 2020-21 academic year. The teams expand Elmira's varsity sports offerings to 20 intercollegiate programs, with the Soaring Eagles hosting the twelfth Division III men's program in New York and the first NCAA Division III women's wrestling program in the state.

"It is an exciting time for Elmira College," said Dr. Elizabeth Lambert, vice president of enrollment management and student life. "With our new partnership with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, the addition of the men's and women's wrestling program, our new eSports team, and our new academic offerings, we are looking forward to attracting a diversity of new students to Elmira College."

At the end of August, the College welcomed Dr. Jacquelyn VanBrunt to the EC family as the new dean of admissions. This position, which was eliminated several years ago, returns to provide focused leadership to admissions and financial aid. Dr. VanBrunt will work closely with Lambert to provide dedicated leadership in the areas of recruitment, admissions, and retention.

"The positive growth and progressive change happening at Elmira College is substantial," said VanBrunt. "I am thrilled to join a team of dedicated, forward thinking professionals who are focused on opportunity and student success."

Also joining the Office of Admissions is Jordan Roblyer '17, admissions counselor, who will be working with students from eastern New York, including the Capital Region and Hudson Valley, as well as the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan.

The admissions team will be hitting the road to meet with prospective students and school counselors this fall. To connect with a counselor, and see if they will be in your area, visit the Admissions Team page on elmira.edu.
