Students Place in Recent Taekwondo Tournament

Elmira, NY (03/24/2020) — The Elmira College Martial Arts Club attended the Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference (ECTC) in Princeton, NJ, on Sunday, March 8. The club was able to place in the top half of their forms divisions along with winning two matches.

"All of them placed in the top half of their forms divisions" said Betsy Smith, assistant professor of chemistry and club advisor. "A third of them won their first fight in the bracket, and the rest fought very strong opponents and kept the fights close.

"The Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference (ECTC) is a longstanding league with dozens of schools that compete in five day-long tournaments every year. This year, EC competed in two tournaments, one at Cornell in the fall, and the most recent at Princeton. The tournaments usually have 400-500 competitors, competing in two types of events, forms and sparring.

Each event is also separated by gender and experience level, and sparring is further separated by weight class. Elmira had six competitors, all in the novice division, competing at the Princeton.

The club plans to compete in multiple tournaments next year, and hopes to continue the growth of the team.
