Powell, Strawinski Receive EC Athlete of the Week Awards

2018 Jan 18

A pair of ice hockey skaters - Connor Powell '20 of the men's team and Shannon Strawinski '19 of the women's team - were crowned Elmira College Athletes of the Week (1/8/18) in recognition of their efforts over the weekend.

Powell, who garnered his second EC Athlete of the Week Award of the season, was named Elmira's representative on the All-Tournament Team at the Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational. The Soaring Eagles went 1-1-0 at the tournament, defeating Connecticut College in the opening round, 3-1, before coming up just shy of an incredible comeback in the title game, a 4-3 loss to Nichols College.

The second-year forward from Merrimack, New Hampshire, led Elmira's goal-scorers with a pair of tallies to go along with one assist in the two games combined. On Friday against the Camels, Powell registered his third game-winning goal of the season. He followed that up with his seventh multi-point outing of the year on Saturday against the Bison with a power-play strike and an assist, as the Soaring Eagles nearly erased a four-goal deficit in the third period.

Through the first 15 games of his sophomore campaign, Powell ranks second on the team in points with seven goals and a career-high 17 assists. Among national leaders, he is tied for fifth in game-winning goals (3), sixth in assists per game (1.13), and ninth in points per game (1.60). In the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC), he leads all players in assists, game-winning goals and power-play points (10).

In their first game back following an extended holiday break, the No. 2/2-ranked EC women put on a show, defeating the No. 4/4-ranked Bulldogs of Adrian College by a 5-1 final score to open play at the eighth annual East-West Hockey Classic, hosted by Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. Strawinski was awarded the game's first star for her part in the victory. The junior from Toms River, New Jersey, amassed two points with one goal and one assist.

Strawinski earned her helper on Elmira's first goal, which was scored by Devyn Gilman '21 late in the second period and tied the game at 1-1. That goal was the first of what turned into a 5-0 Soaring Eagle run, which was capped off by Strawinski's third-period goal. She and Gilman skated into the Adrian zone on a two-on-two rush, and after receiving a centering pass from the rookie, Strawinski quickly buried the puck into the lower left corner of the net.

Heading into Monday afternoon's East-West Hockey Classic title game against No. 3/3 Plattsburgh State, Strawinski has recorded career highs in both points (16) and assists (12), the latter of which is tied for first on the team and in the UCHC.
