Alumna's Poetry Honored in Orchestral Composition
Elmira, NY (04/11/2019) — Longtime writer and Elmira College alumna, Ellen Tifft '39, recently had her poetry honored in an orchestral composition written by Evan Jay Williams, a doctoral candidate in musical arts at The Johns Hopkins University. Williams transformed Tifft's poetry into a single composition titled, That Which We Cannot Live Without, and then performed the piece in February 2019, at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland.
Tifft was known for her long writing career that included publication of several poetry books and numerous poems that were published in magazines such as The New Yorker and The Saturday Evening Post.
A copy of Williams' score can be found in the Mark Twain Archives, a special collection of Twain-related items housed at Elmira College. An audio file of Williams' orchestral composition is available online by clicking here.
