Annual Ceramic's Invitational Opens at George Waters Gallery
Elmira, NY (03/14/2019) — The annual Ceramics Invitational exhibit, highlighting contemporary clay works by regional artists, opens Thursday, March 14 in the George Water Gallery.
The works demonstrate the ways contemporary artists are influenced by ancient pottery traditions as well as more modern approaches that are inspired by abstract sculpture and painting. The exhibit includes a variety of functional vessels as well as more expressive, sculptural pieces.
Artists featured in this year's exhibit includes:

- Colleen McCall, Elmira NY
- Momoku Takeshita Keane, Ithaca NY
- Marc Keane, Ithaca NY
- Jamie Adams, Canyo TX
Professor Chris Longwell, lecturer in art, describes ceramics as the most ancient of art forms, "This is a style of art where humans mold a lump of clay into a functional or abstract form that come into being because of the unique interactions with earth, water, and fire."
The exhibit runs from March 14 through April 4, 2019, with an opening reception from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14. The gallery is open, Monday through Friday, from noon to 4:00 p.m. For more information and updates on the exhibit, visit the George Waters Art Gallery Facebook page.
