Book Review Highlights Environment, Women in Science

Elmira, NY (03/23/2020) — Janna Lindsay, wife of Elmira College President Chuck Lindsay, Dr. Krista Barzen-Hanson, assistant professor of chemistry, and EC student Leeann Lawrence '23, participated in a book review at the Steele Memorial Library in early March focused on the environment and women in science.

The event included a book review of, "Lab Girl: A story of trees, science and love," written by Hope Jahren, discussion, and a presentation on the environmental science major at EC.

"In Lab Girl, Hope Jahren has written a beautiful memoir of growth, and grit in the face of hardships, both personal and professional," said Lindsay. "She connects you to the world of plants through marvelous metaphors and startling truths of the natural world. Her engaging prose inspires readers to work through challenges, for as she tells us, 'Love and learning are similar in that they can never be wasted'."

The book serves as a memoir for Jahren, an American geochemist and geobiologist at the University of Oslo in Norway, and her "fight to establish and fund her own research laboratory."

At Elmira College, which launched a new environmental science major in Fall 2019, students have the opportunity to perform research with faculty who have research interests in the environmental science field. Students in the new major take courses in environmental science, hydrogeology, climatology, geographic information systems, and environmental toxicology, in addition to social science electives, including microeconomics and global environmental issues. The environmental science curriculum culminates in an internship, in which students are immersed in an experience relevant to the foundational coursework and potential jobs graduates may obtain.

Lawrence, who has been working on a research project with Barzen-Hanson, spoke about the research project and issues surrounding recycling, including the impacts of plastic.
