Celebrating National Nursing Week, Nursing Student Award Recipients
Elmira, NY (05/06/2020) — Today is National Nurses Day which marks the beginning of a week-long celebration for National Nurses Week, celebrated May 6 to May 12, 2020. To honor our EC nurses and continue with our award features, today we highlight three nursing award recipients.
Each year three awards are given out to dedicated students within the nursing major, the Excellence in Nursing Senior Year Award, the Rho Gamma Scholarship, and the Professional Nurse of the Twin Tiers Leadership Award.
The Excellence in Nursing Senior Year Award award is a non-monetary gift presented by the Nurse Education Program faculty each year to an outstanding graduating senior nursing student that represents the profession of nursing. He or she has actively participated in the Nurse Education Program, such as, serving as a student representative with the standing committees, ad hoc committee, and/or active involvement in the Nursing Club of Elmira College. This year's recipient is Caitlin Trembley '20.
"This award means a lot to me. It is important to always be the best that I can be and that includes the best nurse," said Trembley. "This award shows to me that all the stress and challenges I have faced have been worth it and have been noticed. It gives me hope that once I leave this "purple bubble" I can make something of myself and make not only my professors proud, but all my friends and family that have supported me throughout the journey - even though I know it wasn't always the easiest."
The second of three awards is the Rho Gamma Scholarship. This is a monetary award given annually to a Rho Gamma member who is a graduating senior nursing student who demonstrates scholarship and excellence in nursing. This award is selected by the nursing faculty. This year's recipient is Emma Stortecky '20.
"I want to say thank you for the award you are presenting me," said Stortecky. "This award represents the hard work, leadership and dedication of a nursing student. I am sincerely honored to be recognized."
The third annual award is the Professional Nurse of the Twin Tiers Leadership Award. This award is presented annually to a graduating senior who demonstrates leadership ability and lives in Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben or Tompkins counties or intends to practice in the area. The recipient is selected by the nursing faculty, and this year's recipient is Jennifer Lewis '20.
"Growing up in the Twin Tiers provided me with experiences and knowledge that I needed to become a nurse," said Lewis. "I am grateful and honored to accept the Professional Nurse of the Twin Tiers Award."
Congratulations to this year's recipients, and thank you to all of our EC nurses!
