EC Signs New Transfer Agreements for Environmental Science, Medicinal Plant Chemistry

Elmira, NY (11/12/2020) — Elmira College recently signed transfer agreements with Corning Community College, providing a seamless transition for CCC graduates to transfer into either EC's environmental science or medicinal plant chemistry programs.

EC's environmental science degree, which launched in 2019, allows students to explore the four spheres of the environment: geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. Students gain broad perspectives in science, social science, and humanities electives, providing them with transferable skills for post-graduate employment.

Earlier this week, the College announced a new sustainability minor, developed with Elmira-native and world-renowned scientist Dr. Margaret "CanopyMeg" Lowman, would be added to the environmental science program.

"We are excited to be working with Dr. Lowman to add a sustainability component to our environmental science program," said Dr. Charles Lindsay, president of Elmira college. "Dr. Lowman's international reputation in the field of forest canopy research and environmental stewardship lends an exciting component to the development of the new minor."

EC also launched its medicinal plant chemistry program in 2019, becoming only the third institution in the country, at the time, to offer an academic program in medicinal plant chemistry. The program, offered within the College's chemistry degree, provides students with a strong background in plant biology, applications of medicinal chemistry, and instrumental analysis of products derived from plants.

"With a surge in industries focused on such things as herbal supplements, craft beers, and wine, skilled professionals are, and will continue to be, needed to perform extraction, purification, and analysis for products derived from plants," said Dr. Corey Stilts, provost at Elmira College.

CCC students interested in learning more about the new transfer agreements should contact Jennifer Robinson, transfer counselor with the EC Office of Admissions, at jrobinson@elmira.edu or 607-426-2951.
