Education Students Present at State Association Conference

Elmira, NY (11/02/2018) — Several Elmira College education students recently presented at the New York State Reading Association conference in Syracuse, New York.

Rebecca Heagy '19 and Sydney Stringham '19, alongside Dr. Deborah Owens, director of teacher education and associate professor of education, ran a session entitled "Graphic Novels, New Literacies, and Empowering Creativity Across the Curriculum." Their presentation examined the use of graphic novels as a means of promoting creativity and empowering middle and high school literacy learners across the curriculum.

Mhairi Holmes '19 and Paula Strickland '19, alongside Dr. James Nageldinger, assistant professor of literacy education, presented on "Literacy, Math, Science And Fluency: A Creative Amalgamation." Their presentation showed how to choose, use, and transform engaging content-rich hybrid text into fluency-enhancing material to enrich content area comprehension.

NYSRA is an affiliate of the International Literacy Association comprised of more than 30 local reading councils having a total membership of over 2,500 educators from across New York State. The organization includes classroom teachers, librarians, reading specialists, parents, college educators, and researchers.
