Elmira College Hosted Area Teachers To Share Literacy Best Practices
Elmira, NY (08/26/2021) — Faculty from the Elmira College education and graduate programs presented during the first annual Literacy Institute event organized by the Elmira City School District. Hosted at Elmira College, the event provided area educators a chance to share best practices and promote literacy in the community.
"At Elmira College, we recognize that excellent teachers are created through partnerships with our local school districts," said Deborah Owens, director of Teacher Education for Elmira College. "Our teacher education candidates are privileged to be able to work with the Elmira City School District's excellent teachers in practicums and student teaching. Dr. Stephanie Johnson and I were fortunate to be a part of the sessions offered to teachers and look forward to continued collaborations with the Elmira City School District."
More than 100 teachers attended and discussed topics such as literacy success for all; intentional, effective use of tools and technology; dismantling barriers and promoting equity and access; assessment and intervention; and engagement and connections.
"The Elmira City School District's Literacy Institute is an exciting opportunity for teachers to learn with and from each other," said event coordinator Jessica Talada, literacy & grant coordinator, Elmira City School District. "Our teachers will be embarking on a learning experience that will build their abilities to support our students in thoroughly developing their literacy skills. We're excited to partner with Elmira College for this wonderful learning experience!"
"Literacy is the great equalizer," said Jay Hillman, director of educational services, Elmira City School District. "We are proud to highlight some of our own talent and work, as we provide a diverse offering of learning and growth opportunities for teachers, and administrators. The institute is a reflection of our commitment to collaboration, collegiality, and community-minded approach, in supporting the needs of every student."
This event served as an opportunity to support an important community-enhancing program while also letting area educators know about the college's one-year Master of Science in Education program. Ideal for teachers seeking a master's degree and professional certification, the program also helps those looking to make a meaningful career change.
