Investment Contest Kicks Off October 1
Elmira, NY (09/28/2020) — Trading begins for the Elmira College Investment Club's 2020-2021 Investment Contest on October 1. The contest is open to all EC students and uses an up-to-date virtual trading platform. The platform allows students to invest a hypothetical sum in stocks, mutual funds, ETF's, bonds and commodities of their choosing. There are over $1,000 in donated prizes for students who place first, second or third. Trading closes on Friday, April 30, 2021.
Matt Amoddio '22 placed first in the 2019-2020 contest with a 5.96% rate of return. All but one of his stock picks generated positive returns and his portfolio significantly outperformed the S&P 500's 1.5% return over the same period. Matt's top pick was Nike (NKE), which returned 15.57%. Marty Kapoian '22 came in a close second with a 4.76% return and Aleksi Ojala '21 placed third with a 4.31% return.
A new addition to the Investment Club this year is an Elmira College Student Chapter of the Financial Management Association. Established in 1970, the Financial Management Association (FMA) members include finance practitioners, academics, and students who are interested in the techniques and advances which define the field of finance. The EC Investment Club was founded by alumnus Patrick Schmelzinger '21. The Club's first meeting of the 2020-2021 academic year took place virtually on Thursday, September 24.
