McCall Publishes Chapter in "The Palgrave Handbook of Philosophy and Public Policy"

Elmira, NY (10/23/2018) — Dr. Corey McCall, Associate professor of philosophy, published a chapter in The Palgrave Handbook of Philosophy and Public Policy, edited by David Boonin of the University of Colorado. McCall's contribution, "Whose Public? The Stakes of Citizens United," analyzes the Supreme Court case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010), a case that fundamentally transformed federal election financing.

Following a brief overview of the case and the precedent that formed the basis for the ruling, McCall's chapter concerns philosophical stakes of the decision and what precisely it says about the public today and the role of philosophy within it. He argues that there are three basic issues: first is the issue of corruption; second is the question of propaganda and the potential dangers the Citizens United case might pose for a democratic polity; and, finally, he examines the dangers this case poses for truly a democratic policy going forward.

More information about the volume can be found on the publisher's website.
