Science Lecture Explores Body's "Fighter Cells"

Elmira, NY (10/30/2019) — Daniel Bastardo Blanco '12, graduate research assistant at St. Judes Children's Hospital, will present a lecture, "Unraveling the 'Sorting Hat' of our body's fighter cells," on Friday, November 1 as part of the 2019 Lecture Series in the Sciences. The lecture examines Blanco's recent findings relating to the molecular mechanism that 'sorts' our body's fighter cells, the T cells, into different lineages.

"The immune system is in charge of defending the body against infections and diseases, and a critical player of the immune system is the T cell," said Blanco. "T cells are highly specialized white blood cells that help mount immune responses. These cells recognize and attack other cells of the body that have gotten infected by viruses or become cancerous."

Blanco's work focuses on understanding the signaling mechanisms and metabolic pathways that control the development and function of T cells.

The lecture begins at 6:00 p.m. in Kolker Lecture Hall and is free and open to the public.
