Sharma Published in International Economic Journal

Elmira, NY (12/04/2018) — A research paper by Dr. Amarendra Sharma, associate professor of economics, was recently accepted for publication in a forthcoming volume of the International Economic Journal. In this paper, titled "The Labor Market Effects of FDI: A Panel Data Evidence from Mexico," Dr. Sharma and his co-author, Oscar Cardenas, study the effect of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on various measures of labor market outcomes. This is done by using a panel data of Mexican states from 2005-2015.

Their research found that the FDI inflows result in a reduction in the overall unemployment rate, a decrease in the percentage of employed people with the need and availability to offer more working hours, and an increase in the median hourly wage rate. They also found that the FDI is not likely to influence the critical employment, informal sector employment, and unemployment duration.
