Students Present at Tenth Annual Student Research Conference

Elmira, NY (05/16/2019) — The Tenth Annual Student Research Conference, held May 15, 2019, in Cowles Hall, showcased 32 independent research projects from 46 students representing multiple disciplines.

For the Academic Writing Session, first-year students are handpicked by the writing instructors to present their work. This year's presenters were Alex Ferber '22, Farrah Fiacco '22, Ally Poppiti '22, and Catherine Smugereski '22. While each received an honorable mention for being selected to present in this session, Farrah Fiacco won the grand prize for her paper entitled HIV criminalization laws: Necessary, but in need of reform.

For the other sessions, students submitted abstracts and were accepted to present in similarly themed paper or poster sessions. The winners of the four paper sessions were:

  • First paper session: Rafael Joseph '21, Savannah Terry '21, and Tristen Tolan '21 for Student Gender Bias in Professor Evaluations at Elmira College
  • Second paper session: Justin Gillule '19 for Legacy Reclaimed:
    A Reevaluation of Dr. Thomas K. Meier's Presidency at Elmira College
  • Third paper session: Nicholas Neary '19 for
    Quantifying the Value of Blocked Shots: Empirical Evidence from NCAA Men's D1 Ice Hockey
  • Fourth paper session: Jeremy Boorum '20 for Bob Dylan's America: American Culture on "Desolation Row"

In addition, five winners stood out from 24 poster presenters in two categories:

  • Best Poster in Natural Sciences: Kaylea Burgess '18 & Cameron Sanderson '21 for Testing the Esterase Activity of 3H04
  • Honorable Mention in Natural Sciences: Nicole Hanselman '20 for Patterns of Pathogens Transfer between Honey Bees and Bumble Bees across North Carolina
  • Best Poster in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Rebecca Heagy '19 & Sydney Stringham '19 for Graphic Novels, New Literacies, and Empowering Creativity and Literacy Across the Curriculum
