Twombly Publishes Book on Pop Culture, Political Scandal
Elmira, NY (11/12/2018) — Dr. Jim Twombly, professor of political science and division chair of the social and behavioral sciences, recently published a new book through Palgrave Macmillan. The book, titled, Political Scandal and American Pop Culture: Sex, Power, and Cover-ups, is part of the company's Palgrave Pivot Series.
Twombly's inspiration for writing the book came from the course he teaches on the subject called, Sex, Power, and Cover Ups: Political Scandal and American Pop Culture. The book carves out a narrow niche in the literature on political scandal as it looks to examine how some scandals become a part of pop culture and others do not. The goal of the book, targeted to classes on American politics or American studies, is to engage students with the drama of the events from Watergate to the advent of media outlets like The Daily Show while imparting knowledge of recent history and the political process.
"As one might imagine, this was a fun project to work on," Twombly noted. "All of the scandals featured in the book were during my lifetime and reacquainting myself with the details was a trip down memory lane." Noting that the book is a bit brief and many scandals were left out, Twombly challenges readers "to think of a scandal that intrigued them and apply the definitions and standards to their personal 'favorite' scandal."
The book is currently available online through Palgrave Macmillan or your favorite book retailer.
