Where are They Going?: Rachel Gamache '19
Elmira, NY (05/07/2019) — As the June 2019 Commencement approaches, the Office of Career Services is taking a look at where members of the Class of 2019 are headed after graduation. This week's, "Where are They Going?," looks at the future plans of Rachel Gamache '19, a speech and language disabilities major.
"Currently I am working as a substitute classroom teacher and individual student aide with the students I worked with during student teaching. My student teaching was done at Thomas Edison High School where I worked with students who had Autism and other disabilities. The student teaching position wasn't like that of education majors. I would pull students out of class to do speech & language therapy with them, either individually or in groups. I am also a volunteer with Compeer.
Next year I will be attending SUNY Plattsburgh for my masters in Speech-Language Pathology. While attending, I will have a graduate assistantship as a Residence Director, similar to EC's Resident Life Coordinator position.
Elmira College has taught me so much more than academics. I have learned to be a stronger leader, to be confident in myself, and how to network with people above me. I am also incredibly grateful for the experience the Speech and Hearing Clinic on campus and my student teaching placement have given me. Most undergraduate students do not get the hands-on opportunities like we do at Elmira College."
Rachel has additional experience working at a residential house in her hometown where she worked with individuals who have intellectual disabilities. Her position held at the residential house was a direct support staff member.
Throughout her time at EC, Rachel was a resident assistant, CSD tutor, Student Association public relations executive, vice president of Lisp, secretary of Silent Voices, treasurer of Omicron Delta Kappa, secretary of Phi Eta Sigma, a member of Kappa Delta Pi, and she will graduate with Summa Cum Laude honors. We wish Rachel all the best as she continues her education at SUNY Plattsburgh!.
