Women's and Gender Studies to Host Women's History Lecture

Elmira, NY (09/16/2019) — The Elmira College Women's and Gender Studies Program will host their first event of the 2019 fall academic year on Tuesday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m. in Peterson Chapel, Cowles Hall. The event, a lecture by Dr. Myra Glenn, Elmira College professor of American history, is titled "Women's History: What It Is and Why It Matters," and is co-sponsored by the Women's March of Elmira.

The talk will explore how women's history has reflected as well as contributed to the struggle for human rights in contemporary America, especially the feminist struggle to empower women. It will focus on the writings of several major scholars to show the impact that women's history has had on the historical profession.

"How does our understanding of the past change if we put women, rather than men, at the center of historical investigation?" questions Glenn. "My talk explores this question by focusing on noted works in US women's history and also by discussing how this field has shaped my own research."

The lecture is free and open to the public.
