Women's March 2020 Set for January 19

Elmira, NY (01/15/2020) — Women's March Elmira is Sunday, January 19, beginning in Wisner Park, Elmira and concluding at Cowles Hall on the Elmira College campus.

The event begins at 1:00 p.m. with six invited speakers each giving a short address about a platform issue including civic engagement, reproductive rights, environmental justice, LGBTQ rights, women in poverty and racial justice. March participants will then walk 0.8 miles to Cowles Hall where a dozen community nonprofits serving women will be tabling. A brief presentation about women's higher education will be offered along with a closing prayer.

The March concludes with a visit to the Empower 2020 exhibition at Community Arts of Elmira.

The exhibition is comprised of submissions by local individuals which reflect their reactions and inspirations from the Women's March, women's struggle for suffrage, equity and justice and/or what's left to do.

A shuttle bus will run continuously from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. amongst the three March sites: Wisner Park, Cowles Hall and Community Arts, picking up and dropping off participants at no charge. Additional information is available on the Women's March Elmira Facebook page.

Elmira College was founded at a time when ideas about human rights and opportunity permeated much of the thinking in Upstate New York. The first gathering devoted to women's rights in this country was held in nearby Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848 with almost 200 women in attendance. This event was significant, particularly in light of the fact that it took about three-quarters of a Century for the 19th Amendment, which gives women the right to vote, to be ratified. A few years later, in 1855, this same spirit inspired the founders of Elmira College to "establish a real college for women." It was the first college for women with a course of study equal in rigor to the best men's colleges.
