The 2016-2017 Outstanding Graduate Thesis Award was recently presented to Heather Somers. The annual award is based on originality, insight and judgement, clarity, as well as mastery of the method used in research.

This year's Cowles Honor Scholar recipients were recongized at the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre. The honor is presented to seniors who have earned a grade point average of 3.6 or above and, thus far, have sustained this academic achievement throughout their Elmira College career. This honor is named for the College's first president, Augustus Cowles.

The Mildred Whittlesey McGraw Attainment Prize was presented at the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre. The Prize was endowed by Harold McGraw, Sr., former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, in honor of his mother, for a junior who has made the greatest contribution in academic achievement, general activities, and citizenship, and who has demonstrated most thoroughly the aims of the College.

The Margaret Locke Community Service Prize was presented at the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre. The Prize was endowed by Barbara Linenthal '75 and other friends of Professor Emerita of Physical Education, Dr. Margaret Locke, to a student who has demonstrated a spirit of service to the campus and wider communities, provides a model of community invoolvement, and makes a difference in the lives of others through service.

The Helen Hitchcock Bjorvand Drawing Prize was presented at the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre. The Prize was endowed in recognition of an extraordinary member of the art faculty, and is presented annually to the full-time Elmira College student submitting the best portfolio of drawings.

The Algernon DeWaters Gorman Prize was presented at the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre. The Prize was endowed to be awarded to the junior with a good overall grade point average who has completed the most scholarly work in chemistry.

The Class of 2000 Prize was presented at the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre. The Prize is given annually to a deserving freshman man going into the sophomore class who exemplifies the standards and spirit of Elmira College.

The Helen Bosworth Beers '24 Prize was presented at the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre. The Prize has been endowed by members of her family in honor of Helen Bosworth Beers, a member of the Class of 1924, to be presented to a junior or senior who, in daily living, supports religious principles and who is a good student and an outstanding citizen in the College.

The Class of 1927 Prize was presented at the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre. The Prize is given annually to a deserving freshman woman going into the sophomore class who exemplifies the standards and spirit of Elmira College.

The Mary Lou Parrella '65 Prize was presented during the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre.

The Daniel Lipson Prize was awarded during the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre.

Freshman Writing Prize was awarded during the Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre.

The Wonderful Class of 2017 celebrated the Graduating Class Reception in Meier Hall on March 24. The annual celebration included presentations of the Outstanding Graduate Award, Alumnae and Alumni Rings, and alumni pins, as well as the announcement of Candlelight Speakers.

Two students, accompanied by Dr. Todd Egan, Associate Professor of Biology, recently presented their research at the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting and Student Research Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

Abigail Carr '16 recently co-authored a paper with Dr. Amarendra Sharma, Associate Professor of Economics, that has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Applied Economics. The paper, titled, "Food Insecurity and Standardized Test Scores," explores the impact of food insecurity on students' standardized test scores by using a state-level panel data from the United States.

Elmira College recently recognized many of its most promising new students with the 81st awarding of the Elmira College Key Award.

Members of the 2016 Elmira College graduating class were recognized with multiple honors and prizes, including induction into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest national honors organization, and officer commissioning with the United States military. The Class of 2016 also included more than 125 graduates receiving summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude honors.

Elmira College held it annual Academic Honors and Student Recognition Banquet, celebrating academic achievements and the contributions of students to clubs and organizations.
