Elmira College

The Mildred Whittlesey McGraw Attainment Award recognizes an Elmira College junior who has made the greatest contribution in academic achievement, general activities, and citizenship, and who has demonstrated most thoroughly the aims of the College. The award was endowed by Harold McGraw, Sr., former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, in honor of his mother. This year, Ryan Hardy '23, a Biochemistry major, was one of three students that received the award.

The Elmira College CRC Basic Chemistry Prize is presented to an outstanding freshman student studying chemistry, based on performance in both the lecture and lab classes.

The Corning Section American chemical Society Award is awarded each year to an outstanding freshman student studying chemistry. This year, Alexa Sitzer '25 received the award.

Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, recently inducted 21 student members into the Elmira College circle, or chapter.

The 2022 Elmira College recipient of the Marian Ames Memorial Prize is Ryan Hardy '23.

The Mary Lou Parrella Prize is given by Lina Parrella in memory of her niece, a member of the Class of 1965, to a gifted Elmira College freshman or sophomore in the field of fine arts. This year the prize has been awarded to Cassidy Ryan '24.

Hannah Whittier '23 is this year's recipient of the Margaret Locke Community Service Prize. The award is given annually to an Elmira College student who has demonstrated a spirit of service to the campus and wider communities, provides a model of community involvement, and makes a difference in the lives of others through service.

The International Student Prize is awarded to a full-time international student who has completed at least one year of full-time study at Elmira College and who excels in academic and student life.

The Hypatia Mathematics Prize is awarded to a female junior who exhibits enthusiasm for mathematics and the desire to share that passion with others through education or other career endeavors. The goal of the prize is to recognize more women for their interest and competency in this important field of study.

The Elmira College Chapter of Sigma Beta Delta, the International Society for Business, Management, and Administration, inducted eight students during a recent ceremony.

The Helen Bosworth Beers '24 Prize is presented to a junior or senior who in daily living supports religious principles, is a good student, and an outstanding citizen in the College.

The Class of 2000 Prize is given annually to a deserving freshman man going into the sophomore class who exemplifies the standards and spirit of Elmira College.

Jacie Beebe '25 has been awarded the Elmira College Class of 1927 Prize for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Each year, the Elmira College Board of Trustees Prize is presented by the Trustees to students whose college experience demonstrates continual growth and development academically, socially, or in service to the College community.

The Algernon DeWaters Gorman Prize, was endowed as an award for the Elmira College junior with a good overall average who has completed the most scholarly work in chemistry.

The Elmira College Chapter of Psi Chi held an induction ceremony on March 27 in Cowles Hall to recognize 10 students who earned membership in the honor society.

Elmira College released its Dean's List for Academic Achievement for the Winter 2022 Term. The Dean's List recognizes full-time undergraduate students who were registered for at least 12 computable credit hours and who earned a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

The Eta Sigma Chapter of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society held student inductions recentlhy. Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) has three major objectives: to promote scholarship in the biological sciences; to promote the dissemination of biological knowledge; and to encourage research.

The Psi Tau Chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society inducted eight new members at an induction ceremony on Wednesday, February 16, 2022.

The 2021 Moser Freshman Prize was recently awarded to seven recipients at the annual Elmira College Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society induction.

On Friday, November 12, sixteen Elmira College students were inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the International Honor Society rewarding first-collegiate-year scholarship.

On November 13, 2021, Dr. Jim Twombly, Professor of Political Science at Elmira College, presented his latest research into the dynamics of votes in the U.S. Senate on presidential appointments to the Cabinet. At the annual meeting of the Northeastern Political Science Association, held virtually for the second year in a row, Twombly presented his findings that presidential approval ratings are related to the number of votes a president's nominees get during their confirmation by the senate. The paper, " The Rise of Dissent: The Relationship Between Presidential Cabinet Nomination Dissenting Votes and Polarization," also suggested that recent increases in the level of political polarization were related to the increasing number of votes against presidential cabinet nominees. Noting that some nominees face extra scrutiny because of scandal or controversial positions, Twombly concluded "There will always be those occasional circumstances that bring negative attention to a cabinet nominee that cause her or him to withdraw or be withdrawn. Given, however, how rare those events are, it may be better to look more closely at the apparently rising number of dissenting votes on presidential cabinet nominations." Twombly noted that this paper was part of a series of papers he has presented at recent political science conferences and plans for it to serve as the centerpiece for his next book, which, if published, would be his fifth.
